AMERICAN
FORK, UTAH (January 19, 2002)- Astonishing true stories of the
gift of tongues, healing, and the raising of the dead are among
those that President Harold B. Lee, eleventh president of The
Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, kept tucked away
in what he labeled his "Miracle File."
After
President Lee's death, his son-in-law, L. Brent Goates, found
the "Miracle File" and felt strongly that these stories
needed to be shared with Latter-day Saints. He compiled the most
compelling stories in his book, Harold B. Lee: Remembering the
Miracles. "President Lee seldom talked about his 'Miracle
File,' even among his family," said Goates. "I was so
impressed with these stories of divine guidance, strength, and
protection at home and abroad. I didn't want their miraculous
nature to be forgotten when I am gone."
This
decision led Goates on an extensive and difficult search to find
the individuals who shared their stories. " I wanted to find
out if these people had remained true and were still strong-if
their miracle stood the test of time," said Goates. "Many
of these letters had been written years earlier and I had to become
my own private detective agency to find them, despite moves and
name changes. I had many miracles of my own during my search."
Goates
had one goal in mind when choosing which stories to include. "We
live in a dark world where people have to fight for their faith,"
said Goates. "I wanted readers to remember that God is close,
that He answers prayers, and that the day of miracles has not
passed."
"Harold
B. Lee served as president of the LDS Church for only eighteen
months-from 1972 to 1973-there are so many members who did not
get to know him," said Robby Nichols, vice president of Marketing
at Covenant Communications. "The fact that this book sold
out of its first printing in less than a month is a strong testament
to the intense interest that members have to finally know this
quiet and powerful man."
"The
allure of this book is that it offers a glimpse into the humility
of a man who, despite his important calling, still marveled at
God's powerful influence in people's lives," said Shauna
Nelsen, Managing Editor at Covenant Communications. "It is
rare to have such an intimate glimpse into the tender heart of
a servant of God."
"Latter-day
Saints can learn from President Lee and create their own 'Miracle
File,'" said Goates. "Most families have miraculous
stories they cherish and I urge them to record them and make them
available for their children to help them in building their faith."
